  • Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina)

  • Northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris)

Behavioral Goal

The kelp forest is cognitive/foraging enrichment (with fish) or structural enrichment (without fish). It promotes species-typical foraging skills (environmental manipulation), cognitive skills (learning how to get the fish), and encourages breath-holding.

Supplies

  • 16 x 3” kelp strands with brass grommets

  • 2” diameter PVC pipe frame

  • Paracord

  • 10” jollyballs with 3” holes cut and smoothed
