Species

  • Hawaiian monk seals (Neomonachus schauinslandi)

  • Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina)

  • California sea lions (Zalophus californianus)

Behavioral Goal

Cognitive (with fish), structural (without fish). The feeding box simulates foraging habitats in the water column (bottom or benthic) feeding. It promotes species-typical foraging skills (environmental manipulation), cognitive skills (learning how to get the fish), and encourages breath-holding.

Supplies

  • 18” x 22” PVC and starboard plastic box.

  • 4 PVC compartment dividers

  • 6 PVC flaps

  • 6 metal rings

  • 10 stainless steel corner brackets

  • 40 stainless steel stop nuts and bolts

  • 4 stainless steel loops for “mitter curtain” kelp attachment
